Get a secure mail key

A security upgrade is coming to AT&T email. If you use Windows Live Mail for email, you’ll have to update your email settings. Learn more about the security upgrade.

Be sure to create a secure mail key to set up or update your AT&T email in Windows Live Mail.

Set up Windows Live Mail for AT&T email

Use these steps to set up your email for the first time or on a new computer.
  1. From Windows Live Mail, select Add e-mail account.
  2. Do the following:
    • Enter your full AT&T email address.
    • Enter your secure mail key for your password.
    • Enter your name as you want it to display to others.
    • Select Remember password.
  3. Select Manually configure server settings for this e-mail account, and then select Next.
  4. Complete the Incoming Server section:
    • Account Type - Select IMAP or POP3
    • Incoming Server - Enter imap.mail.att.net (IMAP) or inbound.att.net (POP3).
    • Select This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
    • Make sure Sign on using displays Clear text authentication.
  5. Complete the Outgoing Server section:
    • Outgoing server - Enter smtp.mail.att.net (IMAP) or outbound.att.net (POP3).
    • Select This server requires a secure connection (SSL) and My outgoing server requires authentication.
  6. Select Next and then Finish. Congratulations! You're ready to go.

Verify or update settings for AT&T email

Already have your email setup, but want to update your email account with your secure mail key? Here’s what you have to do:
  1. Right click your AT&T email and select Properties.
  2. On the General tab:
    • Verify your Name and Email address.
    • Make sure Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing is checked.
  3. Select the Servers tab:
    • Confirm POP3 or IMAP displays for incoming mail server.
    • Check that the Incoming Mail Server has the correct email address.
    • Enter or paste your secure mail key in the Password field.
    • Make sure Remember password is checked.
    • Confirm My server requires authentication is selected for Outgoing Mail server.
  4. Select Outgoing Mail Server Settings and confirm the following:
    • Incoming server: imap.mail.att.net (IMAP) or inbound.att.net (POP3) 
    • Outgoing mail server: smtp.mail.att.com (IMAP) or outbound.att.net (POP3)
  5. Select the Advanced tab and confirm the following:
    • Incoming server - Enter 993 (IMAP) or 995 (POP3).
    • Use the following type of encrypted connection - SSL.
    • Outgoing server - Enter 465 (IMAP and POP3).
    • Use the following type of encrypted connection - SSL.
  6. Select Apply and then OK.
