AT&T Fiber®

Gigabit speed test results

We tested AT&T Fiber gigabit plans in real-world conditions to see how fast download speeds are for games, movies, and more.

AT&T Fiber gigabit internet speed test

If you’re in the market for home internet, you can choose from internet plans with many different speeds to fit your household’s needs, depending on availability from the internet service providers in your area. Where available, AT&T Fiber offers five speed tiers: 5 GIG, 2 GIG, up to 1 GIG, 500Mbps (megabits per second), and 300Mbps. Broadband engineers at AT&T have recently run a study to give consumers context as to what those speeds mean.

They tested 1 GIG, 2 GIG, and 5 GIG internet connections from AT&T Fiber to see what our fastest home internet speeds could do.

How did the test work?

Computers were directly connected to the AT&T Gateway. They tested each speed tier with these tasks:

  • Downloading a 106-minute movie (1080p, 6Mbps encoding).
  • Downloading a 92-GB game
  • Downloading a 16-hour soundtrack
  • Uploading a 522MB file

This chart shows how fast you might expect to perform common tasks online with each speed tier.* Keep in mind, results will vary based on several factors, including hardware and software used, website and application capacity, and the current network load.

The study’s results illustrate how having gigabit internet can provide real value for people who use a lot of bandwidth. With gigabit-speed internet, tasks that used to take several minutes can now be completed in just seconds, freeing up time for other important activities.

How fast is gigabit internet?

With gigabit speeds, you can truly get movies on-demand, without the need to wait for long buffering pauses. Downloading a 106-minute movie to watch offline can take as little as 20 seconds on a 1 GIG connection or even 7 seconds on a 5 GIG connection.

Gigabit internet also makes it more convenient to buy video games online now that you can download games faster than ever. With a 1 GIG fiber plan, you can download a 92GB game in 14 minutes. With a 5 GIG plan, that same 92GB game can be delivered in 4.5 minutes.

Is gigabit internet worth it?

Gigabit internet delivers great value to people with high bandwidth needs.
For power users who want to get the most out of their time, gigabit speed internet can be a game-changer.

With AT&T Fiber equal upload and download speeds, you can download and upload large files fast. That means content creators, video editors, and gamers can spend less time waiting for files to transfer and more time getting things done.
Multi-gig internet is also great for households with multiple users working remotely, downloading large files, or streaming 4K video.

If you have a household with several users with high bandwidth needs, a normal broadband connection may not be enough for everyone to get the best experience. Gigabit-speed internet provides more than enough bandwidth for parents working remotely, college students taking virtual classes, and kids streaming movies all at the same time.

How do I get gigabit internet?

You can get gigabit internet service from your local fiber internet service provider.

If you’d like to find out if you can get AT&T Fiber gigabit internet where you live, you can check availability.

AT&T Fiber is the best option for gigabit home internet because of our 100% fiber-to-the-home network, symmetrical upload and download speeds, and straightforward pricing with no annual contract or price increase after 12 months. Find out more about why AT&T Fiber is the best provider of fiber-optic internet, where available.
