1.5 Gbps achieved in field test on commercial 5G network
As the first carrier in the U.S. to begin introducing standards based mobile 5G on our 5G+ (5G over millimeter wave spectrum) network, we're continuing to evolve quickly and accelerate the technology ecosystem. It also means we're the only company in the U.S. that can test the latest updates in real time on a standards based 5G commercial mobile network.
This morning, we successfully tested a new software update on our live commercial 5G+ network which resulted in speeds over 1.5 Gbps.* This test was conducted in the field using a mobile form factor test device.
The advantage with having a live mobile 5G network is that we could test this upgrade in the lab and take it to the field within hours. And, we could observe how the upgrade performed in both settings - which are very different. We plan to roll out this network upgrade across our network as quickly as possible, enabling our early adopters to be some of the first in the U.S. to start benefitting from the performance enhancements these upgrades will enable in the near future.
This is just one more example of how our leadership in driving the mobile 5G ecosystem and setting the stage for the 5G experiences of tomorrow.
While the promise of wireless speeds in the 1Gbps+ range is something to cheer about, it isn't the end game for mobile 5G services. It's an encouraging point on our 5G journey and progress towards our plans to ultimately offer our customers the network of the future.

Gordon Mansfield, VP, Converged Access and Device Design
Gordon Mansfield is an accomplished, highly innovative thought leader currently responsible for AT&T's converged access and device technology direction. Gordon's team is responsible for the multiyear access and device technology roadmaps at AT&T. He currently is leading the technology decisions for our 5G deployments. Gordon has previously served as the Chairman of the International Small Cell Forum. In this role, he drove broad engagement within the international mobile operator community to build and define the global small cell ecosystem. Gordon has a demonstrated track record of proven leadership, broad technology savvy, proactive stakeholder engagement, and application of business/technical insight globally.
With broad experience in the communications industry, Gordon has held key leadership roles at AT&T, Siemens Communications and the United States Air Force.
Gordon holds a Bachelor's Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology from DeVry Institute of Technology. He has 46 patents awarded to date.
He lives in Atlanta with his two boys, Zachary and Matthew. They are avid boaters and can be found on Lake Lanier most weekends when Gordon is not away on business.
