FaceTime

Make or receive a video or audio call using FaceTime.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to:

Activate FaceTime

From the home screen, select the settings app Settings app > scroll to and select Apps > select FaceTime > select the switch FaceTime switch.

Note: FaceTime requires an applicable data plan and your call recipient must also have a FaceTime-activated iOS device. If you need additional help, view the Apple support article If you can't turn on or sign in to iMessage or FaceTime on your iPhone or iPad. FaceTime now supports up to 32 people at one time.

Make a FaceTime call using the Contacts app

1. From the home screen, navigate to and select the contacts app Contacts app.

2. Select the Sidebar icon Sidebar icon, then select the desired contact.

3. To make a FaceTime call, select the video or phone icon next to Facetime.

Make a FaceTime call using the FaceTime app

1. From the home screen, select the facetime app FaceTime app.

 

Note: Upon first using FaceTime, you will be receive a prompt about Center Stage. Center Stage uses machine learning to adjust the front-facing Ultra Wide camera when you use video apps such as FaceTime on your compatible iPad model or Mac connected to Studio Display. As you move around, Center Stage helps keep you and anyone else with you in the frame. Review the prompt, then select Continue

2. Select the desired contact from the call history or select Create Link or New FaceTime to create a new call and follow the prompts.

Respond to an incoming FaceTime call

Select the desired option

• ACCEPT CALL: Select the Accept icon, then select Join to accept the call.
• DECLINE CALL: Select the Decline icon to decline the call.

Note: To decline a call with a message, select the call window > Message > select the desired message or select Custom... to send a custom message. If your iPhone is locked, select and drag the phone icon Phone icon to the right to answer a call. To decline a call from the lock screen, press the Sleep/wake button twice. If you need additional help, view the Apple support article If you can't make or receive FaceTime calls.

 


 

Record a video message for missed calls

With iPadOS 18, You can leave a video message when someone misses your FaceTime call. After an unsuccessful call attempt, select Record Video and follow the prompts to record your message.

FaceTime options

Select the screen, then select desired option

MUTE: Select the Mute icon.
SWITCH CAMERAS: Select the Flip icon.
END CALL: Select the End call icon
• HIDE CAMERA: Select the Camera icon.

 


Use SharePlay

With enhanced screen sharing capabilities, you can draw on someone’s screen so they can see what they can do on theirs, or control their screen and take actions yourself. You can also stream a show, listen to music together or collaborate in an app while on a FaceTime call. From an active FaceTime call, select the Share icon.

SHAREPLAY SHOWS, MUSIC, COLLABORATE IN APPS & MORE: Select the desired app and follow the prompts.

SCREEN SHARE & SCREEN CONTROL: From the Share screen, select Share My Screen or Ask to Share. The device will countdown and then screen sharing will begin.

While someone is sharing their screen with you, select the screen sharing window to view and interact with the screen.

You can show friends and family what to do from your device by selecting or drawing on the screen. Interactions will appear on both devices for approximately three seconds.

Use Picture-in-picture

From the FaceTime app, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.

The call will appear in the upper right corner of the screen.
 
Note: To change the size of the Picture-in-picture window, drag two fingers from the middle of the screen toward the outer edges of the screen to make the window larger or pinch two fingers from the outer edges of the screen to the middle of the screen to make the window smaller. Select and drag the window to move it to a different area of your screen.
