Is it better to buy a phone outright or buy a phone on an installment plan?

Accepted Answer

Buying a smartphone, including an iPhone, outright will reduce your monthly payments. However, the cost of buying a smartphone outright and buying on an installment plan are ultimately the same. That’s because AT&T offers 0% APR for 36 months for well-qualified customers with the AT&T Installment Plan. In fact, if you buy a smartphone that qualifies for a promotion requiring an installment plan, the cost of the phone on an installment plan may work out to be less than the cost of the smartphone bought outright (without the promotion). 

AT&T also offers the AT&T Installment Plan with AT&T Next Up Anytime. For an extra $10 per month, you may become early upgrade-eligible by turning in your current device for a new one after paying off 33% of the device cost. (The $10 per month AT&T Next Up Anytime charge doesn’t apply toward the installment balance owed on your device.)

One great way to save is by bundling AT&T services. If you’re new to AT&T, you can get AT&T Fiber service, where available, starting at $35 a month plus taxes and fees when you add an eligible AT&T unlimited plan.¹If you already have AT&T Wireless service, you can add AT&T Fiber service starting at $35 a month plus taxes and fees.¹ That’s a savings of $20 per month on your internet bill! If you have AT&T Fiber and add wireless service, you’re also eligible to save $20 per month on your internet bill.

Some customers may be eligible to save money on their monthly bill through the AT&T Signature Program, a discount program that offers benefits to eligible employees, students, and others associated with certain companies, universities, and organizations that have a qualifying service agreement with AT&T. What is the cheapest phone for kids?

When shopping for a cell phone for kids, you might consider which features are important, if parental control options are available, durability of the device and your budget.

You can search for inexpensive kid phones, specifically if price matters most to you, or you can search by features. For example, if you only need basic calling for emergencies, choosing a smartphone with the biggest memory and fastest processor may not make much sense. You'll also need to think about what wireless plan you'll connect their device to so that they have service. If you're a current AT&T Wireless customer, you may be able to simply add a line to your existing wireless plan. Another low-budget option is getting a classic flip phone with a prepaid plan for your kid to use in emergencies.

Pricing of cell phones for kids varies depending on the type of device and additional features available and usually starts around $75. At the bottom of the price range, you'll get simple models which let you communicate with your child but won't have internet access, parental controls, or GPS features. A more expensive device will have many more features and internet access but may cost you over $1,900 if purchased outright.
